In the last
six years, Oyster Creek has benefited from a number of significant
improvements to its systems and components. More than $37
million has been reinvested - not including $20 million
in security enhancement - in upgrading Oyster Creek to ensure
its continued clean, safe and reliable operations.
Highlights of plant improvements:
- $14 million to replace and refurbish
low-pressure turbine rotors, designed to remove industry-identified
causes of potential failure.
- $6 million on new plant computer systems
that monitor reactor and steam system performance, including
a simulator computer used to train and test plant operators.
- $4.1 million for safety system cooling
water-piping upgrades to repair pipes identified through
periodic inspections.
- $3.2 million to replace electric power
supply cables and buy spare replacement transformers to
improve reliability.
- $350,000 for two new emergency diesel-driven
fire pumps used to maintain the plant's fire suppression
system and serve as a backup source of water for emergency
systems.
- $5 million to add noble metals chemistry
to reactor coolant to inhibit corrosion.
- $500,000 to replace four air compressors
with more reliable, state-of-the-art units
