Public
support for Oyster Creek license renewal remains strong
and continues to grow, according to a May 2006 public
opinion survey conducted for Oyster Creek by Bisconti
Research, Inc. About
80 percent approve of Oyster Creek license renewal if the
plant continues to meet federal safety standards. This
percentage has increased from last year’s public
opinion survey.
The 2006 survey replicates one conducted
last year during March 2005. Both the 2005 and
2006 survey results confirm that there is a strong majority of residents
in Ocean County and across the state who support the positive
role Oyster Creek plays in meeting energy demands and the
strict air quality standards of New Jersey. In
fact, 78 percent within the 10-mile EPZ support Oyster
Creek license renewal, up eight percentage points from
last year. Support is even stronger outside the 10-mile
EPZ—82 percent in the 50-mile periphery and 80 percent
statewide.
Bisconti Research of Washington,
DC polled 900 residents in New Jersey to measure their
attitudes and perceptions about Oyster Creek, license
renewal and nuclear energy. There
were three samples of 300 permanent residents of New Jersey,
and samples were representative of all residents within
the following areas:
- The entire state of New Jersey
- The 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ) surrounding
Oyster Creek
- The EPZ periphery-outside the 10-mile EPZ, but within
the 50 mile planning area (New Jersey only).
The margin of error for a sample size of 300 is plus or
minus six percentage points.
Other Major Findings
- Nearly 90 percent believe that the President and Congress
should give high priority to assuring a reliable energy
supply and more than 80 percent give high priority to
become less dependent on foreign energy.
- More than three-fourths of the
public in all three areas believe that nuclear energy
should play an important role in meeting America’s
future electricity needs.
- Awareness of Oyster Creek Generating Station has increased
significantly since the plant announced plans to seek
license renewal: 66 percent in the 10-mile radius, 79
percent in the periphery and 60 percent in all of New
Jersey have heard about plans to seek license renewal
for Oyster Creek.
