One of the ways Oyster Creek maintains its
safe operations is through a robust security program. Oyster
Creek recently completed significant security upgrades,
which total nearly $20 million and meet the Nuclear Regulatory
Commission's (NRC) requirements to defend the station against
potential terrorist attacks.
Even prior to the terrorist attacks of Sept.
11, 2001, U.S. nuclear plants were the most secured commercial
facilities in the nation. Soon after the terrorist attacks,
the NRC issued a series of orders to enhance that already
strong security program at nuclear power plants. While many
of the details about plant security cannot be disclosed,
you can be certain that the best security force is using
the best equipment to defend the plant against any threat.
Highlights of security enhancements include:
- More security guards and additional training
- Improved and increased training requirements
of all guards
- New, more robust vehicle barriers
- New, hardened vehicle checkpoint
- Miles of new fencing
- Guard towers
- Improved main gate guardhouse
